A TORRES STRAIT ISLAND MUSICAL

On 8 May 1968 the Torres Strait Island workers on the Mt Newman railway construction project broke the world record in track-laying. In one day they laid, spiked and anchored 4.35 miles (almost 7 kilometres) of track, smashing the previous record, held by the United States of 2.88 miles (4.6 kilometres).

The record has never been broken.

We acknowledge the First Peoples of the lands on which we create our musical theatre, and the islands and other places from which the stories in this project originate. We pay our respects to our ancestors and elders and to our shared future. We also acknowledge the many Torres Strait community members and creative artists who have contributed to this project.

Straight from the Strait is inspired by the true stories of these Torres Strait Island men who left their homes and their families behind to seek work on the mainland. They found brotherhood and triumph despite the backbreaking labour, forging much of the railway transport infrastructure that operates across the country to this day.

Traditional dance, language and song have been woven expertly with contemporary music in this overwhelmingly joyful celebration of a little known but deeply significant story in Australia’s modern history.

Straight from the Strait is destined to become a major creative legacy for the Torres Strait.

Developed through collaboration and consultation with Torres Strait Island artists, elders and community, this project is led by a team of First Nations creatives, performers, musicians and cultural advisers.
